SOS at Goodwin

Been having some foot trouble since before I went to CA, but really hate missing my walks. So we've been doing shorter walks, but still getting out there. Today we had a great walk out at Goodwin WMA. I was joined by Heather and HFC David, and we saw LOTS of cool stuff. If you didn't GOYB, here is what you missed! We started off the walk with a wood stork. Always a welcome sight!

This was a life bird for Heather, an indigo bunting! Good thing we had HFC David with us, we totally would have missed this otherwise.

This was just silly. This HUGE alligator had a clump of leaves on his butt, I swear,  I think he thought he was disguising himself.

Whoa! Camouflage! Where did he go?? (We humored him:-)

There were lots and lot of birds out there today.
Black-neck stilts, just one of the birds in this group, is
one of my favorite critters.

This was a cool snake. Can't remember what kind,
might have been a black racer.

Green herons usually do not pose, this guy
was very obliging though.

This was a REALLY big bob cat. In
this photo, he looks almost like a
standard poodle in silhouette, which is
just bizarre.

A really pretty and HUGE banded water snake.

Not a great shot, but I just thought it was neat seeing
the deer and the ibises playing together.

Lots or Roseates out there. They are nesting. We saw some babies, but the sun was wrong to get them in a photo.

This was a cool critter, a soft-shelled turtle.  A total poser which made it even better!

SOS at Indrio Savanahs

We've been trying to add new areas to do our walks in, so using the Great Florida Birding Trail as our guide, we went to the Indrio Savanahs this week. If you didn't GOYB, here's what you missed!

A cool milipede

Incredible scenery. It's a small but
really pretty park.

We caught some tourists feeding
the scrub jays. We gave them a
lecture on the endangered
species act and what rangers will
do if they catch you feeding wild
critters (a LARGE fine in case you are
not aware.)

The cactus was in bloom.

A local, but not live snail. If you look in the grass you can
see the door to his shell lying beside him.

The divine Miss H and I at the end of our walk. We didn't make it 6 miles (park wasn't that big) but we sure gave it the old college try.

Unofficial DeeMotivation Event: Birding CA Coast

So, it's been a while since I've updated here. I am way behind on updating official DeeMotivation events, but wanted to let my faithful readers know I'm still here and still getting out there, so much in fact that I haven't had time to sit down and update. One of the things I have been busy with is that that I was bribed to work on a project at work with promise of a birding trip when I got out to CA. I really wanted to see a California Condor, so have been working on the project for about 3 months now, and my reward came last weekend.

So, without further ado, here are the pictures from the unofficial DeeMotivation event, birding the California Coast. I was joined by the awesome birders Cindy and Charlie, who spent the entire weekend indulging me and helping me to build my life list, which I increased by at least 27 species this weekend!

I took a break to do some skinny-dipping, but the weather
was too cold so I had to come back up onto the dock.

This little sea lion on top reminded me of Barty, the
way he just walked right across everyone else on the dock!

Man, these guys were adorable.

last business trip to CA.

At the end of the first day we returned home to Cindy and
Charlie's place. We were cold and wet, but Shamrock
was there to greet us, and he was warm and furry. Just like
home!

This might be a California Condor.
Or it might be vulture. Or it might be a
smudge on my camera lens. If it's the
Condor, it was a lifer, and the only
reason I agreed to work on the project
that brought me to California. If it's not
a Condor, please don't tell me, I will weep
as the last 3 months were for nothing!

No birds, just really pretty coast line.
If you haven't seen it, go now, it's
eroding quickly.

back from Big Sur. This is an Oregon Junco
