Review: Water Bottles

You really can't work out, or do anything in Florida for that matter, without drinking a LOT of water. I was reminded of this on Saturday when we did our SOS walk. The weather was markedly cooler, so I didn't think I needed to bring my CamelBack. I was quite wrong - 6 miles is a long way to walk, no matter how hot it is. But it got me thinking, I have a ton of water bottles, and they all have their plusses and minuses. So here is a quick run down on water bottle basics:

If you plan on spending any serious amount of time outside, this is, hands down, the best investment you can make. It is called a CamelBack, and is an insulated backpack that has a built in water bag. Depending on the size you get, you will spend between $30-50. Mine, shown here is 50 oz and I think it set me back around $40, and worth every penny. It also has pockets for cell phone camera, etc. Because it is insulated, water stays cold. Only downside is that if you do not rinse and DRY it out when you get home, the liner and tubing get skanky pretty quickly. If this happens, just buy a new liner for around $14. Trust me, you will never get the smell/taste out once it gets skanky.
This is probably my favorite water bottle. Pro's are:

  • It is insulated
  • It has a carrying strap
  • It holds 32 oz
  • It doesn't leak
The only real con is that, like the CamelBack, because it is water tight, it gets skanky pretty quickly if it isn't rinsed out immediately after use. This bottle can go in the dishwasher though.

This type of bottle is great for in home use. Because it is not shaped and doesn't have a strap, it is not practical for carrying in the gym or when hiking. But because it is insulated, it is great for sitting on your desk while you work.
This type of bottle is okay for home use if you don't care about your drink staying cold. Again, not practical for use in the gym or hiking as it is hard to carry.
This type of bottle has all of the disadvantages of the one above, with the added disadvantage of, due to the straw, is not spill proof. Other than perhaps being bedridden, I can't really think of a practical use for this type of bottle, and even then, if you tilt it at all, it will leak.
This is a semi-insulated cup with a lid that has a straw opening. Unlike the bottle above, there is a rubber gasket around where the straw goes on this type of cup, which makes it quite a bit more spill resistant. Plus, it has Spongebob on it, how can you not love it? But seriously, it is a good cup for in home use, not practical for the gym or hiking.
Aluminum water bottles have their pro's and cons. On the one hand, they are sturdy, don't leak and as shown here, this one has a little clip so you can clip it to your back pack or bike. If you are concerned with such things, they do not contain any chemicals suspected of messing with human hormones as many plastic bottles do. Aluminum bottles also do not seem to hold the skank the way plastic bottles do. The disadvantage is that, not only is it not insulated, but it can absorb heat, which can make it impractical for outdoor use in Florida, but should be fine in cooler climates.
This is a bottle specifically made to fit on the cross bar of a bicycle. Seemed like a great idea when I got it, but I didn't notice till I was 6 miles out into a marsh the shape of it. It is very small, and indented, which means it only holds about 8 ounces of water. If you are taking a 10 foot bike ride, it might be appropriate, anything longer, you need a real water bottle. Note that the purpose of this is supposed to make it easy to grab on the bike, but in reality, it would be far easier to just use a CamelBack.
Glass bottles are not appropriate for workouts, unless you are exercising your right to consume alcohol.
This is the absolute WORST kind of water bottle. The only time you should consume water in disposable plastic bottles is if you are for example, traveling or at an event, you forgot your own bottle, and there are NO other options.

ALWAYS bring your own water. Although plastic can be recycled, just the process of making these water bottles wastes an insane amount of our natural resources. I realize that not everyone has drinkable water. Our house water is pretty nasty, so I have a PUR water filter, and David has a Brita. I have used and would recommend either.

Let me know if I left anything off here. Coming up next week, I will be writing about what to put in your water bottle!

Best SOS, EVER!!!!

So, my alarm went off at 7:00 am this morning, it was still dark, I was tired, I just wanted to drink coffee and sleep more, but I had scheduled an SOS walk with Heather for 8:30 am. Ugh. I did NOT feel like walking, but with vacation and all I've been kind of slacking, so I forced myself to go (I later found out Heather felt the same way, but neither of us wanted to be the one to cancel.)

So, we get to the parking lot, and before either of us get the chance to gripe about the unholy hour, Heather whispers/screams, "GET THE F'ING CAMERA!!!" Now, Heather really isn't one to cuss, so I knew something was going on... Luckily, I had the camera handy cause it was just the first of a FEW amazing things we saw today -- right in the parking lot, BEFORE we even started walking. If you chose not to GOYB today, you REALLY missed a good one today. Without further ado:

A freaking HUGE bob cat. RIGHT behind us in the parking log at Pelican Island!! He posed for me for a really long time. He said something about "rewarding those who GOTB" Really, Heather heard him too!

He was beautiful. Long legs, just magnificent.

Not as exciting but we found this giant land crab shell. I did not realize that when giant land crabs molt, they even molt their eye deeley-boppers (that might not be the scientific term).

This is a black vulture doing his job. The weird thing was, we walked past this on the way out, and when we came back, the raccoon was completely gone, no sign of him whatsoever. I'm thinking the vulture must have had some friends come and help him drag the feast back to their frat house (or where ever it is that black vultures sit around and nom and drink beer.)

Neither of us could some up with an explanation for this one. There was just about 50 of these lying on the sidewalk. They were too small to be a fisherman's bait. We did get a wild storm last weekend, maybe a wave washed them up onto the road or something? It was very weird.

This was my second favorite find of the day, and my absolute favorite herp in FL. This is a legless lizard, or glass snake. They are sooo pretty. You can tell by the shape of his head he is a legless lizard, not a real snake, you can also tell by how he moves. The picture doesn't do him justice, he is a beautiful copper color. I just love these guys sooo much.

We saw 3 dead raccoons, and this live one. It must be mating season or something.

This was an osprey nomming on a fish.

This is something I've never caught a picture of before -- there is a dolphin AND a manatee! There were actually 3 dolphin, a mom, dad, and baby, and a BUNCH of manatee all hanging out. I just liked this picture best because it's rare to see them hanging out together.  (At least I've never seen it before.)

When I was in Cape May, I picked up skull identification books for me and Heather, although we really didn't need it to identify the three sculls we found today. This is the lower jaw of a raccoon. I was amazed at how well preserved it was, even being able to see the teeth.
If you didn't GOYB today, you really missed some amazing stuff. Heather and I were talking about how cool it is that we can walk the same route every week and still see at least one COMPLETELY new and different critter every time.

Looking forward to our next walk, hope you can join us! Remember, you might see stuff like this on TV, but you will never really experience it unless you GOYB!!

SSSOS (Still Sweaty Six on Sunday) Walk

Man, it was steamy out there today! But as always it was a very cool walk. The butterflies were out in full bloom today. If you didn't GOYB, here's what you missed today! (As always, click a photo to enlarge)

This was the very first thing we saw today - not an auspicious beginning! We have no idea whatsoever what it was. We are open to suggestions.
 A Gulf Fritilary (I think?)
I think this is a Viceroy (I don't remember my butterflies)
This is a Millipede. The next time I gripe about the price of sneakers I will think of him and just be glad that I don't have to purchase 500 pairs of them.
A cute little female fiddler crab.
A White Peacock butterfly. Note that something took a chunk out of one of her wings.
Heather, in a lovely matching skirt and Jelly Fish ensemble.
This was a HUGE jelly fish, apparently dead, that had washed up on shore.
I love the look on his face -- It just screams, "What choo talkin' bout, Willet??"
 A Cloudless Sulpher
I think this was a dead sanderling.
There were a bunch of dead fish today. This is write where the osprey hangs out, so we are thinking he just is a sloppy eater.
Awwwww a cute widdle inch worm!
I have no idea what kind of butterfly this is. He was the tiniest one I've seen, maybe 1/2-3/4 inch. Really pretty though.
On our way back, we noticed that the vultures had been snacking, but we still couldn't figure out what the heck thing is. I was guessing Chukacabra, but most like not!

Hope you join us for a future SOS walk. We will also start doing bike rides again once the weather cools down. Remember, you will never really experience life sitting on your couch! Come out and join us!
